Wales Green Party Leader Visits Swansea

Wales Green Party leader Anthony Slaughter was in Swansea this week to join our regular meeting of local party members.

Addressing an enthusiastic turnout of members in the room plus virtual attendants joining via Zoom, he expressed his gratitude for our army of volunteers for all the hard work they put in earlier this year to win our first seat on Swansea council, and how encouraging it was that our local successes had been repeated across Wales with Greens gaining ground and winning more seats on local authorities than ever before.

"We've seen how Target To Win has delivered in Wales and we are already planning to get the next group of councillors in places where we already have councillors, and also to make sure we have Green representation on every local authority in Wales. We've talked about Target To Win tripling the number of local councillors, I think with the right wind behind us we could achieve 100 Green councillors across Wales at the next election."

He went on to discuss how the next Senedd campaign and the next local authority campaign can complement each other, and how increased representation at a local level can boost national election results as Green councillors are visibly working hard for their communities.

"Under the new (Senedd voting) system it is doable" he said referring to getting Green Members of the Senedd elected. "From the Senedd results in Cardiff last year, a swing of less than 3% would do it. Whats going to shift in the next few years as well is being part of that national discussion and being seen as a credible voice."

He closed by thanking all the members for all the hard work they have done, and all the hard work that is still to come, as elected Green councillors strive to serve their consituents with integrity and enthusiasm, and as we prepare for the next Westminster election in 2024 and the next Senedd campaign in 2026.

It has never been a better time to be a Green as we gain seats and increase our profile across Wales and the UK. If you would like to get involved we are always looking for new members and volunteers to join us. Click here to sign up, or alternately you can help us by making a donation to the local Green party.
